Led by Dutch graphic designers Steffen Maas and Maarten Verweij, the studio initiates and operates temporary design workshops and public lectures for art schools and universities worldwide — working on site with art and design students, in direct engagement with urban space.
Facing Spaces embodies both a position and a method: observing, reflecting, and giving shape to what is encountered.

Position

The working field of designers has fundamentally changed. Designers now operate within a hybrid society in which technological, social, and cultural conditions are constantly shifted and negotiated. Communication no longer follows fixed formats or static hierarchies. As a result, the value of the designer lies not only in visualizing messages, but increasingly in organizing, structuring, and giving meaning to complex flows of information and social interaction.

Approach and context  

Facing Spaces approaches communication as a narrative practice. The city functions as both subject and working field: a dense, layered environment that reflects the complexities of contemporary visual culture and modern life.
Students engage directly with the urban landscapes, working on site and researching spatial, social, and visual conditions - often those that remain unnoticed, hidden, or taken for granted.
During each workshop, participants are trained to observe, analyse, and register these conditions with precision, empathy and curiosity. The ability to read complexity - through the senses as much as through analysis - is treated as a core design skill.

Method

Each workshop is built around a specific theme and explored through a unique, process-based design method. The city is treated as a found object: a context to be experienced, understood, and questioned before it is judged.
Participants act as 'forensic researchers of meaning', when locating, exploring, and interpreting signals in public space. Workshops apply a range of investigative design tools that reinforce one another, such as photographic scanning, creative writing, mapping, building visual essays, and performative or sensory exercises.
The method is hands-on and immersive. Students move, observe, listen, smell, discuss, collect, test, and reflect. This approach expands the professional horizon of (graphic) design students and provides a solid working methodology that can be integrated into both academic studies and future design practices.

Outcome

Each workshop results in a concrete design outcome and (collective) presentation that reflects the underlying research process. Collected material is analyzed, filtered, and distilled to its essence.
Deliverables vary depending on the theme and context of the workshop and may take the form of routing systems, maps, signage, logo systems and brand identities, publications, posters, installations, or other spatial or visual narratives.
The outcomes may also emerge as mainly experimental or research-driven, like through visual essays, spatial narratives, alternative guidebooks, annotated walks, performative interventions, archives of found materials, audio or sensory mappings, temporary publishing formats, or hybrid formats that move between documentation and fiction.
Each outcome translates collected observations into a specific perspective on the city—distilling complexity into forms that are readable, experiential, and open to interpretation.

Educational Position 

The workshops by Facing Spaces address subjects that matter today. They are explicitly hands-on, situational, and embedded in real-world contexts. Learning takes place through direct engagement, collective research, experimentation, and critical reflection.
The program offers an proactive mode of teaching alongside established curricula - by organizing didactic terms alternatively, and by placing equal emphasis on analysis, associative thinking, making and experiencing.
At its core, Facing Spaces offers individual students a unique method of observing, analyzing, and structuring (visual/social) complexity. These process and dialogue based working skills can be applied across their future projects, contexts and (collective) professional practices.

About Steffen Maas

Steffen Maas is a graphic designer, illustrator, and photographer based in the Netherlands and the Caribbean. He studied Illustration and Graphic Design and has built a diverse practice encompassing exhibitions, publications, and public art projects: steffenmaas.nl In addition to his independent and commissioned work, he is involved in various cultural initiatives and platforms. About Maarten Verweij

Maarten Verweij works at the intersection of visual communication, brand identity, and cultural storytelling. As co-founder of the creative studio Sinds 1416, he develops distinctive design solutions that help brands and institutions position themselves with clarity and character.
Alongside his studio practice, Maarten is director and curator of the art institution Machinery of Me, and a founding partner of Ice to Eskimo, a strategic F&B agency.
He regularly shares his approach to design as a form of research and exploration, at the invitation of universities and cultural institutions in the Netherlands and abroad. LinkedIn.

学生直接深入城市景观,现场开展工作,研究空间、社会与视觉状态,聚焦那些常被忽略、隐而不现,或被视作理所当然的日常。
在每次工作坊中,参与者均将接受训练,学习以精准、富有同理心且保持好奇的态度,对这些状况进行观察、分析与记录。对复杂性的读解能力——既依赖感官,也依赖分析——是设计素养的核心。

方法

每次工作坊均围绕特定主题展开,并通过一套独特、以过程为导向的设计方法进行探索。将城市视为一件“现成物(found object)”:一种在作出评判之前,需要先切身体验、理解并追问的环境。
通过对公共空间中各类信号的捕捉、探索与解读,参与者以“意义的法医式研究者”这一角色融入其中。工作坊运用了一系列相辅相成的探索性设计工具,如摄影式扫描、创意写作、地图绘制、视觉随笔创作,以及表演性或感官练习。
这套方法强调亲身实践与沉浸式体验。学生们在其中穿梭、观察、倾听、嗅闻、讨论、收集、测试并反思。这一途径拓宽了(平面)设计专业学生的职业视野,并提供了一套扎实的实践方法论,既服务于当下的学术研究,也支撑未来的设计实践。

成果

每次工作坊均产出具体的设计成果与(集体)展示,呈现背后的研究过程。收集到的素材经过分析与筛选,最终凝练为核心成果。
最终交付成果因工作坊的主题与语境而异,可能表现为导览系统、地图、标识、标志系统与品牌视觉识别、出版物、海报、装置,或其他空间或视觉叙事作品。
这些成果也可能主要以实验性或研究导向的形式呈现,例如视觉随笔、空间叙事、另类导览手册、注释性行走、表演性介入、偶得材料档案、声音或感官映射、临时出版形式,或介于记录与虚构之间的混合形式。
每项成果均将观察所得转化为认识城市的特定视角,将复杂性转化为可阅读、可感知且可开放解读的形式。

直面空间工作坊关注当下重要议题。其强调实践、具体情境,并始终与真实世界环境紧密相关。通过直接参与、集体研究、实验与批判性反思进行学习。
该项目与既有课程体系并行,提供了一种更具主动性的教学方式——通过以不同于常规课程的方式组织教学内容,并将分析能力、联想思维、实践行动与亲身体验置于同等重要的位置。
